In a defensive struggle, the Galesburg boys basketball team saw its five-game winning streak end Friday afternoon, in a 39-36 loss to Sterling in the semi-finals of the Taylorville Holiday Tournament.

The Silver Streaks were plagued by turnovers in a tight game where the biggest lead was six by GHS in the 3rd quarter. At that point, Sterling outscored Galesburg 9-2 to regain the lead early in the 4th quarter.

GHS turned the ball over six times in the final period, including four times in the final five possessions as Sterling won for the sixth time in eight games since its full roster was restored following the football playoffs.

The Silver Streaks are now 11-3.

Khalil Hodge led Galesburg in scoring with 14, but the Streaks shot only 12-42 from the field in producing its lowest score of the season.

Cornell Dotson was our Dave’s Autobody Crunch Time player of the game producing a key offensive rebound in the 4th quarter that led to a Hodge 3-pointer that tied the game for the last time.

Galesburg will play Dunlap for third place Friday night at the Taylorville tournament — a rematch of a Thursday night game in which GHS defeated the Eagles 60-47. Broadcast time for tonight’s final tournament game (depending on whether or not the tournament is on schedule) is set for 6:40 p.m on WGIL.

NOTE:  The Galesburg High School Girls will play Mattoon in the Mattoon Holiday Tournament Championship at 7:30pm tonight.  That game will be broadcast on 92.7 FM The Laser.
