Knoxville in process to replace lead water service lines

knoxville-38

The Knoxville City Council will go through a similar process tonight to what Galesburg council has gone through.

City Engineer Kevan Cooper will present alderman with information about about applying for the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead Water Service Line Replacement Program.

It’s unknown how many homes Knoxville would like to replace lead service lines for but Galesburg was in the process of having 3/4 of the town’s lead lines with $4 million through this program.

The grant prioritizes homes with children and particularly those where children have tested for elevated levels of lead.

Galesburg was targeted by the IEPA for having a 4 of 30 water samples from homes test about safe drinking standards.

While Knoxville hasn’t been known to have been targeted in similar tests, several officials said Galesburg homes frequently have lead service lines because of the age of the town.

Knoxville was founded four years before Galesburg.
