Abingon-Avon seniors earn Associates degree before high school diploma

Six Abingdon-Avon seniors earned a college degree before they technically became high school graduates.Carl Sandburg College held their commencement ceremony last Thursday, a week before Abingdon-Avon High School holds their own ceremony upcoming on Friday.

Six A-Town Tornadoes, Lauren Stephens, Taylor Ginther, Shelby Beil, Dalton Ross, Jaron Postin and Jack Landers obtained their Associates of Arts by taking a heaping helping of dual credit classes.

The students managed completed 61 college credit hours essentially taking on full-time student status at A-Town High School and Sandburg simultaneously by taking classes that applied towards both degrees.

All six graduating Tornadoes now have plans to continue their studies at four-year colleges and universities.

Stephens will attend EIU to study dietetics, Ginther will attend Monmouth to study business, Beil will attend UW-Platteville to study forensic investigation, Ross will attend Methodist College for nursing, Postin is going to Bradley for engineering and Landers is attending Butler to study advertising.

Starting this summer students taking dual enrollment classes at Sandburg will get half off for the first six credit hours in a semester for each semester year round.
