Sibley Underpass expected to open on July 3, nearly 2 years after groundbreaking

It’s been nearly two years since ground was broken for the start of construction on the East Main Street underpass. The tentative date for the Jon A. Sibley Underpass to open to traffic is July 3 and Galesburg’s Director of Planning and Public Works Wayne Carl says if everything goes as planned that target should be met.

He says sod should be put down this week which will make an impact on the project’s appearance.

The contractor also plans on pouring curb and gutter this week into next week and the street will be poured the week after.

Carl says the road way will consist of a composite pavement.

“So there’s a concrete base and then there’s a 3-inch thick asphalt surface and the reason for that is so down the road when the pavement needs some maintenance it can be milled off, put back and and still maintain the 16 foot vertical clearance between the underpass and the roadway,” Carl says.

Carl says that he thinks residents will be satisfied with the finished product, with driving down East Main made easier than ever before by driving the Jon Sibey Underpass and the Don Moffitt Overpass.
