The Knoxville City Council discussed, approved, and planned for a variety of yearly items during Monday night’s meeting at the Knoxville Police Department. Big Catz BBQ in Knoxville was approved to host “Sunday Funday” activities again this summer – starting next month – in the grassy lot behind the restaurant downtown. Alderman approved the closure of Main street come the fall school year for the Knoxville Homecoming Parade. They also approved hiring Harold Wheatley as a new Grounds Maintenance Worker for the City.
The council discussed the 2018-2019 Appropriations again at length, but ultimately tabled discussion until next month’s meeting.

The City is also close to finalizing a deal with MidCentury Communications for fiber optic utility easement for the City. The Council approved the sale of food and ice cream during the July 4th Fireworks show by the Knoxville Mercantile. It was still unclear if the Knoxville Fire Department was going to sell concessions during the event this year.

There were a variety of other items the council discussed and approved. Alderman approved $10,000 to help fund the Knoxville Public Library – an annual, budgeted item. The council approved the purchase of a Vacuum Truck for the Water Department – pending a demonstration of a used truck the council reviewed the specs on last meeting. The truck will be purchased out of funds from the sanitation department budget.

Alderman also gave the “go-ahead” on some maintenance and repair to the south water tower in town. A screening for the tower needed replaced as well as an interior ladder that fell down into the water tower due to rust. McGuire Iron Inc. from Sioux Falls, South Dakota will drain the tower to complete the work.

Alderman also discussed at length the approach to lead water service line replacement. Another round of line replacement is approaching – but Council members were hesitant on making the replacement mandatory. It was decided that after a survey was conducted the council would move forward with a decision. Another safety concern was a surplus of parking on East North Street – to the point where school buses had trouble getting through. Council approved marking East North Street east of Orange Street to Carr “no parking”.
