Rep. Cheri Bustos doesn’t support the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy for those who cross the Mexican border illegally, which have led to over 2,000 children being separated from their parents.President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday that will keep families together in detention, throughout the duration of immigration court proceedings.

Bustos says Trump decided to tear apart “thousands of families” from seeking refuge from violence, rape and murder.

She blasts the President for having “misled” the nation, having initially said that the separation of families couldn’t be solved by executive order.

Trump says he was put “in the position of separating alien families to effectively enforce the law”, referring to a 1997 settlement that says that children can’t be held longer than 20 days.

The order directs Attorney General Jeff Sessions to ask the courts to modify the Flores settlement to allow immigrant families be held together for the duration of their court proceedings.

Bustos says “indefinite detention” is not the answer and “no child should face years of lockup.”
