Funnel Clouds reported in Knox County — but heavy rain was the real problem

It was apparently two different funnel clouds at almost the same time in different parts of Knox County that caused the Tornado Warnings we saw Thursday afternoon.

The National Weather Service says law enforcement reported a tornado on the ground just west of Yates City around 12:30pm. Three minutes later, storm spotters reported a funnel cloud a quarter of the way to the ground east-northeast of Abingdon.

Forecasters warned of weak-circulating funnel clouds being possible during the afternoon, that typically don’t touch the ground and dissipate when rain occurs. But they also said the opposite could be true.

Funnel clouds were also reported near Brimfield in Peoria County.

There were no reports of damage. Heavy rain was the problem with the midday storms and with rains earlier in the morning. The weather service says in each instance, an inch to an inch-and-a-half of rain fell during the period.
