Meth seized, Galesburg man arrested

Bond has been set at $50,000 for a Galesburg man charged with Class X felonies of manufacturing/delivery of methamphetamine less than 100 grams, and armed violence.

34-year-old John E. Traff Jr. made a video appearance in Knox County Circuit Court where Judge Raymond A. Cavanaugh set bond and appointed a public defender in the case.

He also faces a Class 1 Felony of Meth Possession under 100 grams.

According to police reports, Traff Jr., was arrested for driving on a suspended license following a traffic stop. It was around that time that officers observed an open can of beer in the Traff’s vehicle. Reports indicate the beer was still cold to the touch.

When asked if there was anything else in the vehicle that officers needed to be aware of, Traff admitted to having 16 grams of meth in his truck.

He was searched, to which officers found $1,160 in cash on him. When asked if he was selling meth he responded with “eh, not really”

A search of the trunk yielded a black backpack containing two digital scales, one with white residue and the other with brown wax residue. Two glass smoking devices with burnt white residue were also found, as was two baggies with white crystal like substance believed to be methamphetamine. Also found was a notepad that seemed to be a finance ledger.

The white crystal like substance field tested positive for meth and weighed in at 19.2 grams.

He will be back in court August 6th for a preliminary hearing.
