The Knox County Finance Committee approved an increase in the courthouse security fee applied to all defendants who are sentenced.

Sheriff David Clague told committee members that he had previously talked with the Chief Judge in Macomb regarding a fee increase and was shot down.

Clague said that currently the court fee is $25, but it had been suggested that the fee be raised to $80. The fee had not been raised since 2004.

According to Clague, he had spoken with Circuit Judge Paul L. Mangieri regarding a fee increase and it was agreed upon to increase it to $50.

The fee does not apply to those paying traffic fines.

The increased fee will go into effect on September 1st if approved by the full county board on August 22nd.
