Police investigate resold southern Illinois cemetery plots

SOUTH ROXANA, Ill. (AP) – Families in southern Illinois are coming forth with complaints operators of a cemetery resold plots that were already paid for.

South Roxana Police Chief Bob Coles said Thursday investigators served subpoenas for the records of Wanda Cemetery.

In a statement, Coles said complainants said cemetery staff refused to talk to them about their lots, forcing them to report the issues to police.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports Wanda Cemetery office manager Diana Williams said the subpoenas request records for three families who have complaints, along with all sales receipts the cemetery has on file from 1990 through 2018.

In a previous statement, Cole said one person filed a complaint in March about lots she purchased being resold without her permission.

Williams said Thursday after going through records from 2012 to 2018, no other lots were resold like the one in March, which she said was due to a bookkeeping error.
