Group raising money for Ray Bradbury statue nears its goal

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) – A group raising money for a 12-foot-tall statue honoring author Ray Bradbury has almost reached its goal.

The Lake County News-Sun reports the statue could be erected outside the Waukegan Public Library by next summer.

Bradbury was born in Waukegan on Aug. 22, 1920. He authored hundreds of works including “Fahrenheit 451,” “The Martian Chronicles” and “Dandelion Wine.”

The group raising money for the statue is part of the Waukegan Public Library Foundation. They’ve raised $107,000 of the $125,000 needed and hope to have the rest of the money by the end of this year.

The stainless steel statue was inspired by Bradbury’s poem “If Only We Had Taller Been.” It would show Bradbury on a rocket, waving a book.
