Pilot program to reduce lead paint levels available to home owners

The City of Galesburg in conjunction with the Western Illinois Regional Council is mitigating lead paint in residences and are still looking for about ten more homes. The program is intended for low-income homeowners and the City can come and do an assessment of the home. Director of Planning and Public Works Wayne Carl tells WGIL it includes window replacements, door replacements, and siding in some cases. “Anything that has lead paint that needs to be dealt with,” Carl said. “It’s totally free. We spend between $15,000 and $20,000 on a home, and there’s no cost to the home owner for this work.” The program is for owner-occupied homes only. Carl says the program is a pilot study that the State of Illinois is doing with the City of Galesburg to try to combat lead levels in Knox County. Interested home owners or for questions, you can call Carl’s office with any questions at 345-3624.
