Newcomers seeking Galesburg aldermen seats, Karlin won’t run again

We’re only a few weeks away from when races for Congress, Illinois Governor and Attorney General will be decided. But almost soon as Election Day comes and goes in November, local municipal races will be getting underway.

Already four candidates have filed paperwork with the Galesburg Election Commission to run for Galesburg City Council in the spring, with one incumbent promising he will do so soon.

Current Ward 5 Alderman Peter Schwartzman, is being challenged by a familiar opponent, in Ted Hoffman Jr.

Hoffman, a retired Galesburg firefighter unsuccessfully ran against Schwartzman in 2015.

The other seats with terms expiring, Wards 1, 3, and 7 all have candidates filed but no officially contested races yet.

Bradley Hix, a Galesburg native and current resident who holds two degrees in political science has filed to run in Ward 1 to help the city in “economic development.”

“I think the council and the City Manager are doing a fine job I just would like to be a part of helping the city grow and prosper,” Hix says.

Currently, Angela Bastian holds that seat and she has not filed paperwork or responded to a message from WGIL asking whether she’ll run.

WGIL has learned that Jeremy Karlin will not run again leaving his seat open.

Right now, local attorney Ashley Worby is the only candidate running for the Ward 7 position.

“I just noticed that we don’t have a whole lot of youth in leadership positions in the community and that’s been a goal of mine as a young professional that I want to be a part of the community,” Worby says.

Finally, incumbent Russell Fleming is running unopposed right now in Ward 3.

Candidates have until Dec. 17 to file.
