Knox College is welcoming a nationally known author and activist who is primarily known for her advocacy on behalf of restaurant workers.Saru Jayaraman has authored two books including the national best seller, “Behind the Kitchen Door” which explores conditions for workers in American restaurants.

The book and the much of her work underlines that often restaurant workers face discriminatory labor practices, exploitation and unlivable wages.

Post 9/11 she founded Restaurant Opportunities Center United to assist with displaced World Trade Center employees.

Since then the organization has grown to have 30,000 worker partners and 500 employer partners with a goal to improve wages and conditions for restaurant workers.

Jayaraman will give a talk underscoring similar issues when she comes to the Round Room in the Ford Center for Fine Arts on Monday at 7 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

Jayaraman has been named one of CNN’s “Top 10 Visionary Women” and recognized as a Champion of Change by the White House in 2014, and a James Beard Foundation Leadership Award in 2015.
