VILLA PARK, Ill. (AP) – Official misconduct charges have been filed against a former civilian employee of a suburban Chicago police department for allegedly stealing drugs from an evidence vault.
John Simons of Lombard turned himself into authorities at the DuPage County sheriff’s office on Tuesday, posted bail and was released. The 48-year-old Simons is also charged with theft of government property, possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor theft.
DuPage County prosecutors say Simons is accused of stealing hydrocodone pills on Oct. 10 from the police department evidence vault. He since has resigned.
State’s Attorney Bob Berlin said in a written statement Wednesday “there is no room for the type of behavior alleged in this case at any workplace.”
It wasn’t immediately known if Simons has retained legal representation.
