A shotgun that may have been stolen in 2016 was recovered Sunday night in Galesburg.

According to a police report, officers were on patrol in the 400-block of South Prairie Street at around 10:15 when a hooded male, holding an object too big to hold in his hand, was seen riding a green bicycle south along Depot Street. Officers observed that the object the man was holding appeared to be wrapped in a blanket or carpet. The report indicates the bike did not have functioning lights.

The subject was observed to abruptly turn onto a sidewalk and into a gravel parking lot that had no businesses, residences and was bordering railroad property. It was noted that the officers found the behavior suspicious.

Officers attempted to locate the subject but only found the discarded bicycle and the object wrapped in a blanket. Knox County Sheriff’s Deputies and a K9 unit were called to aid in the search to no avail.

The object was determined to be a Mossberg New Haven 12-Guage Shotgun with an empty 3-round magazine. All markings and model information on the gun had been covered by black paint. Additionally, officers noted in the report that “The end of the barrel had been threaded with something similar to a pipe threader possibly to attach a muzzle device such as a brake or suppressor.” The report indicates a similar gun was stolen a couple years before, but it had not been positively identified as of Monday morning.

The blanket was described as a James Hautman wolf blanket.

There were no suspects as of 10:00 a.m. Monday.
