UPDATED Authorities in Fulton County say a man is in jail after what essentially was a drug deal gone bad that had lead to an Amber Alert being issued Saturday night.

Law enforcement officials say it first started around 5pm Saturday, when a car was reported stolen in Farmington with a child in the back seat. Mitchell Dutz told authorities that he was inside a Farmington gas station paying for fuel when his vehicle with a child inside was stolen.

Authorities say that triggered an investigation and search for the vehicle, a command post being set up, and a statewide Amber Alert going into effect.

But investigators say during the interview process, it was learned that Dutz made the whole thing up, and that he was allegedly robbed during a drug deal, wanting to use the infant as a way to pursue charges against the alleged robbers.

A suspect named during the Amber Alert was not involved in any way, authorities say, and it was later learned that the infant was never in any danger.

Dutz is in the Fulton County Jail, facing charges of Residential Burglary, Filing a False Police Report, False Representation of a Police Statement, and Making a False 911 Call. Other charges, authorities say, are pending.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  While we chose not to name the suspect referenced in the original Amber Alert in this story, as he is currently not facing charges in connection with the incident, his name is listed in the Facebook postings below.
