Galesburg Silver Streaks Girls Basketball vs. United Township Panthers

Here’s a recap of the Streaks victory from WGIL’s Tom Meredith:

The Galesburg girls basketball team is now 5-2 in the Western Big 6 Conference, 16-9 overall, after a come-from-behind win over the United Township Panthers at John Thiel Gym.

The Streaks were leading 14-8 at the end of the 1st quarter, but then had a pretty tough middle two quarters of the game and the Panthers had a 14-point lead in the 3rd quarter. In fact the Streaks didn’t even score until less than four minutes to play in the 3rd quarter. But it was a furious come-back, including some full-court pressure that caused several United Township turnovers. The Streaks hit 7 of 10 free throws all in the 4th quarter. They had three players in double-figures and the Silver Streaks complete the come-back for the 56-52 win.

It was Chloe McCarthy leading the way with 15-points and she also had a couple of rebounds, an assist, and three steals. She also hit four 3-pointers in the game. And in the crucial 4th quarter Chloe had 7 points, 2 steals, and an assist, making her our Dave’s Autobody Crunch-Time Player of the Game.

Riley Jenkins had 11 points in the ball game. She hit 3 of 4 free throws in the 4th quarter. Kelsi Legge had 10 points, including a couple of 3-pointers. Daija Range had 8 rebounds in the game.

Streaks did get out-rebounded by the Panthers but shot the ball well enough, 20 of 44 and 9 of 21 from beyond the 3-point arc, to come out with the win.

The sophomores also got a win tonight, 56-23.

The GHS girls play two games in the Downstate Classic Tournament in Lincoln on Saturday, with the first pregame scheduled for 1:10 PM on WGIL.
