Congresswoman Cheri Bustos was appointed by the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee to serve her fourth consecutive term on the Agriculture Committee.

As the House Appropriations Committee is an exclusive appointment, Congresswoman Bustos received a waiver from the Speaker to serve on the Agriculture Committee this Congress. Congresswoman Bustos was appointed to the Appropriations Committee the week before.

“Serving on the Appropriations Committee is a win for our region and a win for Illinois,” Congresswoman Bustos said.

Last Congress, she was selected to serve as a Farm Bill Conferee, where she helped move a bipartisan Farm Bill across the finish line that provided farmers with much-needed stability in turbulent times.

Bustos has also been an advocate for the health of rural America.  In the 115th Congress, she introduced the bipartisan Rural Health Liaison Act, which creates a new position at the U.S.

Department of Agriculture to better serve the health needs of rural America and the Addiction Recovery for Rural Communities Act, which equips communities with the resources they need to combat the opioid epidemic that has disproportionally hit rural America.

In a statement, Bustos said, “As the largest economic driver in our state, fighting for our agricultural producers has always been a top priority of mine.

She added, “I am proud to have been part of the work to pass a Farm Bill last Congress and am excited to continue my tenure on the Agriculture Committee to ensure the voice of Illinois farmers are given a seat at the table in Washington.

Bustos was also named to three key subcommittees on the House Appropriations Committee.

According to a news release, her new subcommittee assignments position her to effectively fight for the priorities of our region with appointments to the Appropriations Subcommittees on Defense; Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies; and Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies.

“These subcommittee assignments will put me in a strong position to fight for the critical defense priorities in our region, veterans who’ve served our country with honor and hardworking families who are just trying to make ends meet,” Bustos said.

As a member of this subcommittee overseeing the Department of Defense, she will be a voice for the Rock Island Arsenal, Peoria Air National Guard and the many defense contractors in the Rockford community.

As a member of the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education subcommittee, she’ll make sure workers have access to the training they need to succeed, that our hospitals in small towns have the funding to keep their doors open and that communities across Illinois can fight back against the opioid epidemic.
