Knox County residents in need of assistance with energy bills can take advantage of the Knox County Health Department and John Mosser Library partnering to provide assistance with signing up for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.

The Health Department will be signing up eligible households between 1:00 and 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the library, located at 106 West Meek Street in Abingdon.

Eligible households in Abingdon and Knox County may apply for LIHEAP assistance by contacting the Health Department between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30p.m. to schedule an appointment.

The state and federally funded program provides one-time benefits to income-eligible households to help pay with winter energy bills or help with the reconnection of energy services.

To qualify, applicants must bring proof of social security numbers for all household members, proof of gross income for all household members for the previous 30-day period – including the day of application, a copy of the current heat and electric bill from the last 30 days, and proof of assistance from the Illinois Department of Human Services – such as TANF, SNAP, or Medical Eligibility

Additionally, the household’s combined gross income for the last 30 days must be at or below 150-percent of the federal poverty level to be assistance eligible.

The program is administered by the state Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and the Office of Community Assistance. Locally, the program is administered by the health department.

The LIHEAP program will continue until May 31st, or until funding is exhausted.
