More work is to be done to U.S. 34 around Monmouth in the coming year.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced last year that the highway would be patched and resurfaced from the U.S. 34/67 junction to the southwest of the Maple City, all the way to the intersection of North 11th Street on the northeast corner of town.

As part of the work, the City of Monmouth will be contributing money from the city’s restricted use, motor fuel tax revenue to a cost share for the maintenance and improvement of traffic signals at four intersections along the highway.

According to the city council summary from Tuesday night’s meeting, Aldermen approved the cost share amount of $15,870 to be contributed to IDOT’s maintenance of those traffic signals. The summary indicates that no new traffic signals are being added at this time.

The four intersections affected are at West Broadway, North Main, North 6th, and at North 11th Streets.

In 2019, IDOT will be rehabbing the 34 bridge over 67 where the junction is. 34 is slated to have more work done to it in the near future throughout the area, including the northern section of Galesburg.
