The Abingdon Police Department is warning residents and local business owners of fake 100 dollar bills circulating the area.

Officials say the best way to check if a bill is authentic is by using a counterfeit detector pen available at most office supply stores or online.

Check for a security strip embedded in the bill and the watermark on the bill when held up to light.

APD also says that if you received multiple bills – check for matching serial numbers and check the texture of the bill.

Fake bills collected have been darker in color and the image isn’t as sharp as a real bill.

Finally, some of the fake bills that have been turned in even say “Play Money” on the back near the large 100.

If you have information on someone using or attempting to use fake bills, call the Police Department at (309) 462-2091.
