One area hospital has been recognized by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention for meeting the requirements of its evidence-based Diabetes Prevention Program.

OSF HealthCare Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth meets the standards established by the CDC to deliver diabetes programs that help prevent type two diabetes.

In February, the hospital kicked off the first “Be WELL” program, a partnership with the Warren County YMCA to improve community health.

The open enrolment program costs $15 a month with participants meeting every Thursday evening for 45 minutes to learn new recipes, exercises, motivation, and meditation as well as ways to improve their overall well-being.

Patty Luker, President of OSF Holy Family, says, “Receiving full recognition is a rewarding reflection of the work our Diabetes Education Mission Partners do and the exceptional care they provide for those we serve.

Through lifestyle changes, the two organizations are utilizing the CDC’s diabetes prevention curriculum to help fight the disease.

According to the CDC, lifestyle change programs with certain elements can reduce a person’s risk of developing type two diabetes by 50-percent.
