A semi-truck carrying 17,000-pounds of explosives made too fast of a turn and rolled over near Monmouth.

According to the Illinois State Police, a 44-year-old driver from Dallas City was transporting class 1.3 hazardous materials east on U.S. 34 and turning on the U.S. 67 northbound on-ramp when he took the right turn and rolled onto the driver’s side at around noon Tuesday.

None of the hazardous materials were released and remained inside the vehicle, according to the state police.

According to the Hazardous Materials Fusion Center, class 1.3 hazardous materials are “explosives which have a fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard or a minor projection hazard or both, but not a mass explosion hazard”

The driver was transported to OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth for minor injuries and was later released. He was issued a citation for driving too fast for the conditions.

The driver was hauling for J&M Displays in Yarmouth, Iowa.
