Politicians show solidarity with striking CSO musicians

CHICAGO (AP) – Striking Chicago Symphony Orchestra musicians have picked up the support of some members of Illinois’ congressional delegation and the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The musicians, who walked off last week, are fighting for better wages, health benefits, and retirement plans. Illinois’ congressional delegation joined the striking musicians on the picket line Tuesday.

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky says she and the other politicians want to make sure orchestra leaders come to the bargaining table and talk with workers and musicians.

In a letter to the musicians, Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote Democrats stand in solidarity with them in asking the symphony to “come to the table with respect for the value of your work.”

In a statement, the orchestra says it remains committed to reaching a consensus on a new agreement that’s generous to the musicians and “sustainable.”
