Ground broken on terminal expansion at O’Hare airport

CHICAGO (AP) – Ground has been broken on the first phase of a $1.2 billion expansion of a terminal at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and airline officials attended the Wednesday event. City officials say that Terminal 5 will gain another 350,000-square-feet by 2021. The space will make room for airline lounges, concessions and passenger amenities. The expansion will include six new security lanes at the 25-year-old terminal and improved immigration facilities. There also will be ten new gates for aircraft parking.

City officials say that construction will take place in phases to minimize the impact on travelers, airlines, and businesses.

Later construction phases could include more roadway capacity, a new parking garage, and a terminal-adjacent hotel.
