Galesburg man facing arson charges takes plea deal

A 33-year old Galesburg man took a plea deal Wednesday in Knox County Court that allowed aggravated arson charges against him to be dismissed.Roberto Rodriguez plead guilty to a Class A misdemeanor of Criminal Damage to property for an incident in December in which police said he turned on a gas stove in an effort to burn the house he was living in down, attempting to kill himself in the process.

There were also two children in the house at the time.

Ultimately, no was one was hurt at the residence in the 600 block of South Street.

Judge Scott Shiplett sentenced Rodriguez to 214 days in prison, and was given credit for already having served half of that, and was also put back on probation that he was already serving for an earlier 2018 offense.

Rodriguez was facing charges as serious as Class X aggravated arson which could have landed with a mandatory sentence of 3 to 60 years.
