A former Knox County State’s Attorney who later became a 9th Judicial Circuit Judge is retiring from that post in less than three months.

The office of Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas Kilbride — overseeing judicial operations in this area — says 9th Judicial Circuit Judge Paul Mangieri will retire as of July 3rd, creating a vacancy on the local bench.  Kilbride’s office does not offer a reason for the retirement.

Mangieri has been a judge since 2007, and voters last chose to retain Mangieri in the November, 2014 election, giving him a six-year term.  Prior to that, Mangieri spent 20 years as Knox County State’s Attorney — replaced by John Pepmeyer.  Mangieri was also a Judge Advocate General in the U.S. Navy in the mid-1980’s.

Kilbride’s office says while notices of the vacancy have been posted in the county courthouses of the 9th Circuit, anyone wishing to apply for the vacancy must go to the Illinois Supreme Court website to learn more details, and apply before May 10th.

Applicants must be admitted to practice law in Illinois, among other requirements, including “a demonstrated reputation for integrity and good character.”  The appointee would serve through at December of 2020, unless they are approved for retention in the November 2020 election.

According to the State Supreme Court website, as of 2017, a circuit court judge makes more than $198,000 a year, while an associate judge makes about $10,000 less.
