Property taxes expected to be late this year

Knox County property owners may be getting their tax bill a little later than usual this year.

That’s what Knox County Treasurer Robin Davis told Finance Committee members at last night’s meeting.

Davis said that the paperwork was sent to the County Clerk’s office on April 5, and the abstract was sent to the state, expecting to be a few weeks before they’re back at the treasurer’s office.

“They can take three to four weeks to get that back,” Davis told the committee. “And then, however long it takes the County Clerk to do what they need to do. Then after it’s rolled to me, I need about two weeks to doublecheck everything, print the bills, then we cannot set the first due date until 30 days after the bills are mailed. So at this point in time, it’s looking like your property tax bills are going to be late this year.”

Davis said that the County usually tries to distribute tax money by the end of June, but it may not work out that way.

The committee approved a handful of items Wednesday, including a switch in telephone companies at the Courthouse, Sheriff’s Department, and Annex.

The committee chose to switch from CenturyLink to Stratus Networks after the new company met the specs of their bid.

Information Technology Coordinator Andy Rowe told the committee that the new provider was more reliable, and the new set up would provide more redundancies in case of emergencies, like when the county saw 911 loss last year.

“We’re not only gaining extra capacity for future expansion, but we are basically providing, now,  a redundant path [for if] we have trouble with Stratus for some reason that we could fall back on CenturyLink unless it’s a regional issue. Then we’re ‘up the creek’ at that point.”

Additionally, the committee approved a new Civil Clerk fee resolution to bring the county in line with a state mandate.
