Dixie L. Avery, 74, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 12:15 pm, Monday, June 10, 2019, at Trinity Unity Point Hospital, Rock Island, IL. She was born on July 28, 1944, in Little York, IL, the daughter of Charles William and Emma H. (Lewis) Toops.  Dixie was raised and educated in Little York, IL and graduated from Yorkwood High School in 1962. She later earned her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education from Carl Sandburg College. Dixie married Gary W. Avery in Little York, IL, on December 9, 1967; he survives. Dixie worked at Formfit in Monmouth for a time.  She then was a homemaker; Dixie enjoyed being home taking care of her family along with keeping an immaculate home.  She later worked at Head Start in Monmouth as a teacher for 22 years, retiring in 2007.  Dixie was currently attending Cameron Christian Church; she was formerly a member of the 1st Baptist Church in Monmouth.  She enjoyed cooking and doing crossword puzzles.  Most of all, she enjoyed taking care of her family, especially her grandchildren.  Dixie was also a foster mother to many over the years. Surviving Dixie is her husband, Gary Avery of Monmouth, IL, two children; Trent (Jaimie) Avery of Cameron, IL, Taelor (Jim) Elliott of Maryville, TN; and three grandchildren, Tucker Avery, Tage Avery, and Easton Elliott.  Also, surviving is one sister, Cindy Peddicord of Little York, IL; one niece, Stevie Peddicord of Little York, IL; nephew, Bill Toops of Kirkwood, IL, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Herb Toops.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 14, 2019, at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth.  Interment will be in Little York Cemetery, Little York, IL.  Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 13, 2019, at the funeral home.  A memorial fund has been established and will be designated at a later date.
