Galesburg City Council

Galesburg Alderman will consider accepting the donation of a downtown property that will come along with some pricey repairs at their Monday night meeting.

The administration says that the current shape of 120 E. Main St., next door to Park Plaza, is creating a safety issue.

For more than a year the walkway by the building has been barricaded off from the public, as the east wall leans.

Director of Planning and Public Works Wayne Carl says they’ve been working with the building owner for about a year to make repairs, but in the end, the owner couldn’t obtain financing.

The administration determined that the best way to allow the Park Plaza renovation to continue and to save the building from demolition, in the long run, was to accept a donation. Council documents say the expected repairs, including a roof replacement, would cost around $300,000, while Carl says demolition would cost more.

Galesburg City Council is also expected to approve a change order for Shawn Stoneking Corporation, the contractor working on the West Theater’s demolition.

After the theater building was removed it was discovered that the existing brick walls were in inferior condition and not in good enough shape to tuckpoint and paint as planned. The change order is in the amount of about $131,000.

It also includes additional work in creating solutions for exterior wall and foundation treatments.

In other business, aldermen can also approve an agreement to complete documents to construct a new Street Division office/sign shop.

The existing building used by the street department at 122 S. Henderson St. is not in good condition according to administration, and not adequate for the street division’s needs.

In the end, it’s estimated that this reconstruction will cost in the neighborhood of $1.5 to $1.7 million, but the agreement on the council’s agenda tonight is for about $65,000.

Council will also decide on changing their regularly scheduled meeting time from 6:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Meetings would still be on the first and third Mondays of the month.
