Authorities are now saying two men were trying to fish on a Fulton County lake when one of them drowned, and couldn’t be recovered until almost a day after the accident.

Illinois Conservation Police say that’s what caused the drowning, first reported Saturday afternoon on Rice Lake southeast of Canton.  Officials say two makes were in a kayak trying to cross the lake in order to go fishing, when choppy waters caused the kayak to overturn.

Neither was wearing a life jacket at the time, but police say one of the men got one on before floating to shore. The man then hiked to a campsite to call for help when he couldn’t see the other man.

A search for the second man lasted most of Saturday afternoon and evening to no avail. That man was found an hour and a half into the search Sunday morning.

Multiple agencies are said to have aided in the search. Identities have not yet been released.
