Strong storms wake up Galesburg

They likely didn’t get the area out of the minor drought situation being experienced, but storms during the morning hours in the area  Tuesday likely got our attention.

A line of strong to severe thunderstorms moved their way across Illinois — including the Galesburg area — hit just as many kids were going to school and adults were going to work today.

Storm reports submitted to the National Weather Service indicate that numerous trees and tree branches were reported down in the Galesburg area, taking power lines with them in some cases.

Ameren at one point had several hundred Galesburg area customers being in the dark. The utility opened its Emergency Operations Center, as other parts of a good section of their territory area also had strong to severe storms.

The storms here caused the most visible damage to a wall adjacent to the Orpheum Theatre here and to some cars, with an intersection near Silas Willard Elementary School having to be closed due to down trees as well.  Other parts of the state reported similar damage, with wind gusts in exces of 60 miles per hour in some places.

You can see more storm damage pictures on WGIL’s Facebook page.

Some more chances of rain are in the forecast through Thursday, before it cools down a little for the weekend, but will be dry.
