Labor Day weekend may signify the “end of summer” for many – so the Illinois State Police are making traveling safely a top priority. You can expect to see more police out on the roads this weekend. They’re looking for drunk drivers and other violators. The beefed-up enforcement includes roadside safety checks and special detail says spokesperson Guy Tridgell. “They’ll be targeting the times when people are out most likely to be on the roads when they’re impaired,” Tridgell said. “So the overnight hours are certainly an emphasis. Really, this is going to be a really significant law enforcement period. So if you’re out on the roads and you’re impaired you’re really taking a big chance.” The Illinois State Police’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign began on August 14 and runs through September 2.
Troopers will also be watching for those who fail to slow down and move over when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle with rotating lights or any stationary vehicle with flashing lights on the side of the roadway. IDOT says, plan how you’re going to get home ahead of time if you’re going to be drinking. Take advantage of options like ridesharing, cabs, or a sober friend.
