There’s a lot of local opportunities this weekend to get out, do some good and maybe even fun while at the same time.
The West Central Illinois Out of the Darkness Community Walk will take place Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
Funds are being raised for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention but organizers also say raising awareness of those who have been affected by a suicide or those who may be at risk of suicide.
Registration can be done in person. The walking trail begins around Lake Storey shelter #1.
Lending a helping hand is always better when it involves eating delicious food.
Falling under that heading is the Galesburg Rescue Mission and Women’s Shelter’s annual hog roast, being held Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m., rain or shine.
The menu includes pork, baked beans, potato salad, and pie or cake with ice cream. Adults can eat for a $7 donation and for kids 12 and under, a $3 donation is suggested, and carryout will be available.
It’s hard to believe but this year the Knox County Humane Society’s Doggie Jog is in its 27th year.
The fundraiser for the no-kill shelter is taking place this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at 1855 Windish Drive. Registration fee is $20 and includes a t-shirt and a photo with you and your pet.
Later on Saturday at Prairie Players’ Oktoberfest brats, beer and polka be abound.
The Heidelberg German Band hailing from Quincy will perform throughout the night and it all takes place at Prairie Players Theater at 160 S. Seminary St.
Cost is a $5 cover at the door.
Also Saturday night the first-ever music trivia night for the Cremation Assistance Foundation that helps pay for unexpected burial expenses.
Cost is $100 a team and doors open at 5 with trivia at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The tunes will be spun and trivia hosted by The Laser’s Chris LaGrow.
