Unemployment down in the area

Area unemployment continues to go down.

Numbers released Thursday from the Illinois Department of Employment Security shows that Knox County and the City of Galesburg’s unemployment dropped to 4.4 percent for August of 2019. That reflects a full percent drop for Galesburg while a .9 percent decrease for the county.

Breaking down the numbers, in the month of August, The labor force for Knox County was 22,078 with 21,114 of those people declared as employed. A difference of 964 who are unemployed.

Compared to the year before, the labor force was 22,150 with only 20,986 employed. The number of unemployed then was 1,164.

Warren County came in with the lowest unemployment in the area, down to 3.6 percent in August compared with 4.3 the year before.

The highest unemployment seen is in Fulton County where it is 5 percent. That number is still significantly lower than it was a year ago when it was 6.1 percent.

Unemployment around the area was down too. Henry, McDonough, Mercer, Peoria, Stark, Counties all saw decreases in their unemployment from last year.

Looking at a more micro level, the City of Galesburg saw a full percentage point decrease in unemployment from 5.8 to 4.8 percent.

Broken down, that change is reflected in an increase in employed (11,688 to 11,760) and a decrease in the labor force (12,409 to 12,353).
