163 layoffs announced for Quad City Deere plants

Deere and Company announced 163 layoffs at two Quad City locations Tuesday, citing decreased customer demand.
Ken Golden with Global Public Relations says approximately 50 production employees will be placed on indefinite layoff effective Oct. 28 at Harvester Works in East Moline.

Another 113 production workers at Davenport Works were informed they will be indefinitely laid off effective Nov. 18.

Deere announced last month that its rolling 3-month sales for 2-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive vehicles had fallen behind the industry.

Equipment operation net sales were down 3 percent year-over-year in the third quarter.

Already U.S. farm cash receipts have been flat since 2015 but trade tensions with China and record planting delays from unfavorable weather further constrained farm equipment sales.

Golden tells WGIL that each Deere factory balances the size of its production workforce with customer demand for products from their individual factory.
No other Deere locations announced layoffs Tuesday.
