Twinkle, twinkle Capitol dome? Maybe, maybe not

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – Holiday lights won’t be strung up on the Capitol dome in Springfield for a while and possibly not at all this year.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports the lights that are normally strung up can’t be because of a weeklong study of the dome that was ordered after state employees noticed small pieces of concrete had fallen from the inside portion of the outer dome.

Installing the lights would interfere with workers who must rappel down the outside of the dome looking for damage. Harl Ray of the Department of Physical Services for Secretary of State Jesse White says it’s possible that the lights can be put up this year after the study but only if it’s not too windy and the weather doesn’t make task dangerous.
