First ‘Songbag’ concert of 2016

February 27, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$5

The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site will bring a little tropical warmth to the Illinois winter with its first “Songbag” concert of 2016: the Hawaiian sounds of “The Wacky Keys.”

The Wacky Keys are a three-piece Hawaiian band that plays traditional Hawaiian music but also swing, pop, country and more.

The Feb. 27 concert takes place in the Sandburg site’s barn at 313 E. Third Street, Galesburg. The show starts at 7 p.m. and ends at 9 with a break for refreshments around 8. A donation of $5 per person is suggested.

The Wacky Keys are Diane Norman on guitar, Dave “DK” Kolars on Hawaiian lap steel guitar and Mike Warfel playing bass. Visit www.davekolars.com for more information.

The concert is sponsored by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association. Ann Mueller, a member of the association’s board, will serve as host for the concert.

Before each concert, a “Sandburg reader” presents a piece of the famed author’s work. It could be poetry, prose or perhaps a selection from his autobiography. Sarah Pawlicki, a Knox College student, will be the reader at this concert.

Carl Sandburg was a collector and performer of America’s folk songs. The series is named in honor of Sandburg’s book “The American Songbag,” published in 1927.

The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, includes the home where the famed poet and biographer was born. For more information, visit www.sandburg.org.
