From Slavery to Freedom: The Life of Susan “Sukey” Richardson

The production of From Slavery to Freedom: The Life of Susan “Sukey” Richardson will take place at the Central Congregational Church on September 24, 2016 at 2:00 pm. The play is written and directed by Vicky Mundwiler.

From Slavery to Freedom looks at the life and events surrounding Susan  “Sukey” Richardson’s escape from slavery, her imprisonment, and her life  as a free woman of color in Knox County, IL. This historical account of Susan’s life will take you on her hard journey, from Georgia to Illinois. Susan’s imprisonment in Knoxville, the loss of her children and her escape  to Galesburg.

Susan was a woman of faith, courage and strength. She lived a long and active life in the Galesburg community; she married in Galesburg, attended First Church and was instrumental in the founding of the Allen Chapel AME Church of Galesburg, IL.

From Slavery to Freedom features opening music by Jazz Vocalist and Educator Semenya McCord and closing music by Allen Chapel AME Church Choir directed by Barbara King.

Written by Vicky Mundwiler, From Slavery to Freedom: The Life of Susan  “Sukey” Richardson is her second attempt at historical play writing. Vicky wishes that “everyone attending the play will come away inspired by a  woman who suffered so may tragedies in her life and yet rose up to achieve many of her dreams. Her story is truly amazing.”
