Galesburg Civic Art Center Hosts Exhibition of Works by David Gregory

The Galesburg Civic Art Center is pleased to host a series of works by David Gregory of Peoria, Illinois, in the Joanne R. Goudie Gallery. This exhibition will be on display from Friday, May 6 through Saturday, May 21, 2016. An opening reception will be held Friday, May 6 from 5-7pm. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
“David Gregory’s work is an opportunity for the Art Center to share beautiful work in watercolors and oils, but also share the poetry of Carl Sandburg. While we were not able to overlap the Sandburg Days Festival in our exhibition calendar, we hope that this exhibition will be an extension of the great events that have been happening over the last week,” says Tuesday Ҫetin, Executive Director.
David Gregory is inspired by Carl Sandburg’s poetry, and this series of work is a reaction to the imagery or mood of his poems. Says David Gregory, “I am particularly drawn to these poems, for my career as a realist landscape painter began in central Illinois where I grew up and, later in life, built my art studio on an Illinois farm.”
Born in Canton, Illinois in 1947, the oldest of 14 children, Gregory began his art training while majoring in architecture at the University of Illinois. After transferring to the School or Fine Art, he encountered Professor Billy Morrow Jackson, whose Midwest landscapes ignited a desire to study painting. Gregory enrolled in Jackson’s class, and continued to receive private instruction and critiques from Jackson after leaving the University. His work can be found in a number of private and public collections, and most recently has had his work shown in galleries in California, Michigan and Kentucky.
