Gritty folk music comes to Sandburg Historic Site

February 25, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The “Songbag” concert series at the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site returns for spring with the gritty folk group Eric Pettit Lion on Feb. 25

The group describes its music as a “dark collection of folk songs” that tell intense stories of people and places, life and death, family and politics. But its sound can be charming. Mandolin, harmonica, bass and guitar blend into a warm – and catchy – wave of Americana.

The group will perform in the Sandburg site’s barn at 313 E. Third Street, Galesburg. The show starts at 7 p.m. and ends at 9 with a break for refreshments around 8. A donation of $5 per person is suggested.

Based in Burlington, Iowa, Eric Pettit Lion consists of Eric Pettit, Tim Buhmeyer, Ed Mansheim, and Micah Oleson. The group has one album under its belt, and Pettit has released several on his own. For more information, visit www.Facebook.com/ericpettitlion.

The concert is sponsored by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association.

Carl Sandburg was a collector and performer of America’s folk songs. The series is named in honor of Sandburg’s book “The American Songbag,” published in 1927.

The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site includes the home where the famed poet and biographer was born. For more information, visit www.sandburg.org.

The site is operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. IHPA protects the state’s historic resources, which contribute to education, culture and the economy. IHPA sites include ancient burial mounds, forts and buildings erected by settlers, and homes connected to famous Illinoisans.
