“Songbag” concert

August 27, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$5

The first “Songbag” concert of the autumn season features innovative guitarist Andreas Kapsalis on Aug. 27 at the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site.

Kapsalis plays by picking the guitar strings while also tapping them and the guitar itself. In effect, he turns the guitar into both a string instrument and a percussion instrument. It’s a technique he developed while recovering from a hand injury as a young man.

Kapsalis has released numerous albums as part of a trio and a duo. His first solo album was released last year. He has also written music for several documentary and feature films. For more about his work, visit www.akguitar.com.

The concert takes place in the Sandburg site’s barn at 313 E. Third Street, Galesburg. The show starts at 7 p.m. and ends at 9 with a break for refreshments around 8. A donation of $5 per person is suggested.

The concert is sponsored by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association.

Carl Sandburg was a collector and performer of America’s folk songs. The series is named in honor of Sandburg’s book “The American Songbag,” published in 1927.

The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site includes the home where the famed poet and biographer was born. For more information, visit www.sandburg.org.

The site is operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. IHPA protects the state’s historic resources, which contribute to education, culture and the economy. IHPA sites include ancient burial mounds, forts and buildings erected by settlers, and homes connected to famous Illinoisans.
