Julie McVey Reading Day – Step Up Challenge

Wanted: Worn, tattered American flags

Now through Memorial Day, the community can drop off their worn, torn tattered American flags at Galesburg Walmart. The AMVets Post 8 and local Boy Scouts will retire those flags ceremoniously at a later date.

Poppy Days

The Galesburg American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary will be distributing red poppies — a symbol of sacrifice to honor men and women who served and died for their country in all wars. Many local businesses have consented to have volunteers distribute poppies or place a canister at their places of businesses. Any donations received will stay local and benefit our local veterans in nursing homes, Honor Flight, Veterans Van, and Defenders of Freedom. Also, look for the poppy window…

Silent Home Cemetery in Warren County’s Floyd Township, Illinois, will hold its annual Memorial Day Celebration on May 26.  Established in 1860 by Royal Wiswell, it has in the last century and a half become the final resting place for veterans of the nation’s wars. The City of Galesburg’s Memorial Day Parade will step off from near Seminary and Main Streets on Monday, May 27, taking the usual parade route down East Main Street, turning on to Cherry Street, and ending at the Knox County Courthouse.
