Abingdon City Council Approves Ballot Question
Abingdon residents will be the next in Knox County to decide essentially whether or not they want cheaper electric rates.

The Abingdon City Council voted at a special meeting Tuesday night to place a question on the April consolidated election ballot asking residents whether or not they want to take part in municipal aggregation, where a city negotiates with a third-party energy supplier for cheaper electric rates -- something that electric utility Ameren actually supports.

Abingdon Alderman Myron Hovind is spearheading the effort, and says an energy provider he's been talking to could get a pretty good rate for residents per kilowatt hour.

"Right now if we were with them our rate would be 4. It was 4.4 a month ago so it's even down now. And I think right now we pay 6.1 it's a substantial savings for our residents."

That would be assuming the city seeks competitive bids and approves the company Hovind has been talking with -- Integrys Energy Solutions. Integrys supplies energy now to city-owned buildings and street lights.

Even though they're not a sure thing, Hovind says Integrys has offered to come to Abingdon and hold meetings and other educational opportunities with residents ahead of the April ballot.

Galesburg and Knoxville have already approved similar measures.
