| Teen Free After Pleading Guilty To High-Speed Chase |
A Peoria-area teenager busted in Knox County after leading sheriffs deputies on a chase reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour is a free man.
Knox County Circuit Court Judge Scott Shipplett sentenced 18-year old Isaiah Royer to the 167 days he's already served in the Knox County Jail, along with 30 months of probation after pleading guilty last month to a Class 3 felony charge of Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding.
Probation was what Public Defender Karl Johnson asked for in the case, while Knox County Assistant State's Attorney Elisa Tanner asked for prison time. Royer could have received one to three years in prison.
Royer was arrested last August third, when Knox County Sheriffs Deputies were alerted to a high-speed chase coming into Knox County on Interstate 74 from Washington, Illinois, where Royer allegedly sped off in a stolen S-U-V.
Knox County Sheriffs Sergeant Tim Sandrock testified today he clocked the vehicle going 108 miles per hour at one point before it exited at Knoxville. Sandrock says he shot at the vehicle at one point when it headed toward him while blocking the exit.
Royer was eventually stopped on railroad tracks in East Galesburg.
Royer testified today that he was sorry for what he did, and asked for a second chance -- this, despite Tanner saying Royer has had second chances before, after being put on probation months before the arrest for an Attempted Burglary in Tazewell County.
Shipplett said Royer still had a chance at rehabilitation, and sending him to prison would only end up making him more of a hardened criminal.
Royer was ordered to pay 85-hundred dollars in restitution, must under substance abuse evaluation, and not leave the state. |
