Galesburg Schools May Introduce Advertising
A last Monday's District 205 Board of Education meeting, the board considered revising a policy to expand the type of advertising in schools.

As it stands now, the advertising policy only allows for 501c3 organizations, but with new language, it may expand revenue opportunities and naming rights.

Reactions were mixed on the board during the discussion, but the additional revenue would prevent raising the District's portion of the property tax levy.

Board President Natalie Kessler says they have to make up for a lack of revenues from the State.

"The real hit were the other funds that we were going to use that we were budgeted out of thanks to the State of Illinois," says Kessler. "So we were planning to use some other monies that's now part of other cuts that we have to make so there are no furnishings in this."

Discussion on the language is still being considered by the board and administration.

Naming right's policies and distributing information to students were the disputed topics. When reviewing the policy, Board member Michael Panther says the policy should really be two policies.

"Part of this is saying, you know, 'ok here's what we're going to do in terms of naming and donations people have' and part of it is simply how the boy scouts are going to distribute their pamphlets or whatever and those are two entirely different things and I almost think those should be two policies," says Panther.

Superintendent Bart Arthur told the board they would consider revising it and bring it back for another reading.
