Local Church Honors Dr. King
First Baptist Church in downtown Galesburg held a service Sunday afternoon in tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King.

More than 75 people were in attendance to read poetry, sing, dance, and a hear few important messages about nonviolence.

The event was put on by the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee. Pam Davidson chairs the committee.

She tells WGIL there are strong messages in the service connecting our time with what he was fighting for.

"Some of the same things Martin talked about then, we're still going through right now," Davidson said. "The great thing about this tribute to Martin -- and the Martin Luther King Celebration Committee -- it's just not about color, it's about people. As Martin says, it's about justice."

She went on to say that the country doesn't have to accept any of the violence it is experiencing in many respects.

Dr. King was a strong proponent of nonviolence as a protest tactic during the 1960's.

Celebrations were had all across Galesburg Sunday and Monday to celebrate his life and message.
