Architects Vie For New Library Design
The Galesburg Public Library finally got to see their needs put to paper at tonight's design competition.

Architects from three firms: FEH, OPN, and Engberg Anderson presented their ideas to the community.

The designs ranged in concept from modern to traditional but were surprisingly within the same ballpark on estimated cost.

Galesburg Public Library Director Harriet Zipfel tells WGIL she thinks the competition went very well.

"We have three outstanding architectural firms to choose from, each of them gave us insightful designs," says Zipfel. "It's going to be a tough decision and what I really loved about this evening is that even though it was a very cold night we did have a significant amount of the community come out."

The architectural firms had twenty minutes to present followed by time to ask questions from the board.

The event, which lasted more than four hours, saw various questions asked about cost, scope, resources the firm has available, and showing Galesburg's history.

Library Board Chair Martin Reichel tells WGIL the resources will play heavily into their decision.

"We definitely need help with fundraising and if we didn't go with the fundraiser that FEH had, we'd have to go find one ourselves I'm sure because we just don't have the time or the talent to deal with that sort of thing," says Reichel.

Among the concerns asked by the board was the speed each of the firms could use in putting together a design to meet the State's grant cycle.

The Library Board will meet to discuss a possible selection at their next meeting.
