Bustos Urges Working with Republicans
She replaced a Republican, but Knox County's newest representative in Congress says she knows she has to work with them.

Cheri Bustos recently spoke with reporters on a conference call. The 17th District Democrat took her oath of office last week, officially replacing Bobby Schilling.

Bustos says she wants to work in a bi-partisan manner as much as possible, and looks no further in doing that than U.S. Transportation Secretary and former 18th District Congressman Ray LaHood, whom she recently talked with.

"We talked not only about transportation needs in our region, but we also talked about his history with bi-partisanship," Bustos said. "Ray LaHood was a Republican member of Congress out of the Peoria area, who is now serving as Secretary of Transportation in a Democratic administration. He was known during his long tenure reaching across the aisle to get things done."

Bustos says she still wants to have a retreat with all 82 new members of Congress who were sworn in last week -- much like she says LaHood would do.

Bustos is serving on the House Transportation and Agriculture Committees -- ones she says are crucial to the newly-redrawn 17th District.

Bustos referenced opening up a Congressional office in Rockford, but didn't indicate what she would do with the Galesburg office.
